Fallas de Valencia
The Fallas are a Valencian festival that is held each year from March 15 to 19 and combine tradition, satire, visual arts and fireworks in an absolutely original mixture unequalled in the world.
The Fallas, in the strict sense, are figures or central compositions several metres in height, surrounded by numerous papier-mâché or polyurethane figures mounted on a wooden frame. They include signs written in the local language of Valencia explaining the meaning of each scene, always with critical and satirical humour.
The climax of the festival comes on March 19 with the Cremà or burning, when all the "Fallas" are burnt in a clamour of fireworks and pyrotechnics.
