Sitges Carnival 2020
The Sitges Carnival is one of the largest in Spain, and has been taking place every year since 1976 without exception. It has 44 floats, more than 2000 participants, and around 300,000 visitors. This carnival is the „Mardi Gras“ of Spain.
Historically, the celebration symbolizes the beginning of Lent, a period of 40 days before Easter where Christians abstain from all their vices and pleasures. Carnival marks the last chance to do bad things before the fasting season.
Like each year, The Sitges Carnival 2020 will be the most important celebration in the city and if you are planning to discover this amazing event, there are a few things you should know:
What is the Carnival about?
The celebration begins with the arrival of the so-called King of Carnival on Thursday, February 20, also known as „Jueves Ladero“ or Fat Thursday.
Together with the Queen of Carnival, he leads the celebrations until the following Wednesday when a great procession takes place during which the king is killed, symbolizing the end of the fun.
The death of the King is a particularly lavish spectacle in Sitges, where glamorous widows and drag queens dressed in black come to mourn the death of the party.
